A garden-fresh two-piece by Agnes Barrett of Los Angeles captures early 1950s femininity at its most exuberant. The bodice features a squared neckline and center-front button placket, its unprinted ground providing a crisp counterpoint to the spectacular skirt below. Cap sleeves frame the shoulders in a cascade of full-blown roses, peonies, morning glories, and filler blossoms in deep crimson, blush pink, butter yellow, periwinkle blue, and garden green. The full skirt is ingeniously cut to show off the print, with clustered bouquets sweeping dramatically around the hem and climbing the panels in an all-over pattern. The fabric’s slightly waxy surface sheen is characteristic of true chintz, the florals applied with the bold, gestural quality typical of the finest early-decade American printed cottons. Zips up the back with original metal zipper. In excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear.
