A rare and dramatic Victorian cape in black silk, cut full and swinging with a high ruffled collar.  The body is worked in Art Nouveau-style appliqué: lustrous silk taffeta lilies and whiplash scrolls are cut out and laid over sheer net, then outlined in fine corded stitching, with tiny hand-embroidered leaf sprays on the petals. The net shows through between the motifs, so the pattern looks lacy and lightweight, and the silk catches the light with a blue-black sheen. The collar is a ruffle of pleated silk and ribbon, and a tiered flounce of Chantilly-type lace falls at the hem, finished with a scalloped edge. A lace panel runs down the center back. It closes at the neck with a hook and eye, and the cape hangs open below. Late-Victorian mourning fashion at its most artful, and a striking piece for a collector or for display.

Condition: very good for age with some minor signs of wear including small breaks in the netting throughout the scrolling pattern. Small breaks in the lace hem, only seen on close inspection. Otherwise very clean and wearable. Presents and wears just like the photos.
