Marvelous 1950’s cotton circle skirt and matching top, made in Mexico by Mocombo. The fabric is a painted stripe in black and warm tobacco brown that gives the ground a subtle wood like texture. The decoration is the thing: vertical bands of hand-painted silver scrollwork run the full length of the skirt, a sinuous, rhythmic pattern of spirals and elongated diamond forms that has the improvisational quality of true handwork. The skirt is a full circle, voluminous and swirling. The fitted bodice has a deep V at both front and back and cap sleeves. The skirt zips up the side and even has a side pocket. Both pieces are in excellent, seemingly unworn condition. 

Mocombo was one of several Mexican resort labels producing hand-painted and embroidered cotton separates for the tourist and resort market in the 1950s — collectible, wearable folk art.
