A fabulous example from Pauline Lake’s couture salon at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Honolulu, circa mid-1950s. This strapless sarong dress is cut from a richly printed cotton in a fine geometric batik-style pattern — repeating diamond medallions in warm tobacco brown, navy, and cream — that reads with the precision of an authentic Indonesian batik textile. The allover repeat has a jewel-like density that elevates the cotton well beyond typical resort fabric.
The boned strapless bodice is shaped to a sweetheart neckline and fitted through the waist. The skirt wraps and drapes in classic sarong fashion, gathered and tied at the hip, with the sash extending to the back where it falls in a loose trailing panel — deliberately reversing to expose the solid navy cotton lining, a sophisticated contrast that turns the construction detail into a design element. Zips up side with original metal zipper, in excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear. 

*Pauline Lake operated her couture atelier within the Royal Hawaiian Hotel — Waikiki’s legendary “Pink Palace” — from the 1950s through the 1960s, dressing the hotel’s wealthy international clientele in made-to-order pieces that fused Polynesian textile traditions with European couture construction.
