A magnificent example of James Galanos at the height of his creative powers, this exquisite cocktail dress exemplifies the Los Angeles couturier’s uncompromising dedication to luxurious fabrication and impeccable construction that earned him the distinction of being America’s answer to Parisian haute couture.

Executed in the finest silk chiffon, the dress is printed in a painterly, abstract vertical brushstroke pattern in a rich palette of forest and emerald greens accented by orange, amber, blue, and gold — a design that evokes both the Impressionist canvases of Monet and the bold artistic energy of the early 1960s. The semi-sheer quality of the chiffon lends the garment an ethereal, luminous quality as it moves.

 The bodice is fashioned with gently draped, cap sleeves in a single layer of chiffon that float away from the body with extraordinary delicacy. A shallow bateau neckline frames the décolletage with refined understatement. The bodice is supported by a solid celadon green silk lining — visible in the interior shots — cut and boned with the precision of a garment twice its price, a hallmark of the Galanos atelier.

The waist is defined by a finely pleated sash of the same printed chiffon, gathered and folded into a structured cummerbund-like band that draws multiple layers of fabric into an intricately ruched detail. 
The full skirt falls from the natural waist in densely pleated chiffon, giving the skirt extraordinary volume and movement without the need for crinoline. The hem is finished with a deep, separately-attached flounce tier, adding further drama and swing to the already generous sweep of the skirt. The dress zips up the back with original metal zipper. The dress is fully lined in a brilliant grass-green silk crepe, cut to mirror the outer shell precisely. In overall excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear.
