 This late 1950s cocktail dress by Mike Anthony is a masterclass in sculptural draping: the fitted bateau-neck bodice with short cap sleeves gives way to an extraordinary draped skirt, its fabric gathered and twisted at the hip into a dramatic pouf that billows out and tapers back at the hem — a silhouette that nods unmistakably to the period’s fascination with Balenciaga’s cocoon forms. The deep V back is an unexpected reveal, sensual against the dress’s otherwise modest front. Inside, the dress is finished with the care of the era’s better ready-to-wear: a silk lining, grosgrain waist stay with hook-and-eye closure, and a metal zipper — and the skirt is supported by a built-in crinoline of blue net that maintains the sculptural shape without a separate petticoat. The label reads simply Mike Anthony. In overall excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear. 

This dress is so much better in person! My camera is unable to capture the color and texture of the fabric. I photographed the dress both with and without a crinoline under the skirt.

Condition:  excellent, freshly cleaned and ready to wear. Minor signs of wear typical of age. Faint discoloration on one of the pleats in the back. Only noticed upon inspection, wears and presents beautifully.
