This exquisite early 50’s black cocktail dress exemplifies the height of postwar elegance, bearing the prestigious Saks Fifth Avenue label and attributed to Sophie Gimbel — the legendary designer behind Saks’ celebrated “Salon Moderne” who dressed First Ladies and society luminaries alike.
Executed in fine pleated silk organza, the fabric is worked into precise horizontal pin-tucks throughout, lending the dress a luxurious texture that catches light with every movement. Sumptuous black alecon lace cascade across the bodice, shoulders, and skirt in sweeping semi sheer bands, adding depth and romantic drama against the matte-sheened ground.
The silhouette is a quintessential expression of the New Look — the revolutionary aesthetic introduced by Christian Dior in 1947 that swept away wartime austerity in favor of unabashedly feminine luxury. The nipped bodice sculpts a defined waist, cinched further by the original self-fabric belt. The skirt is composed of a series of panels. Cap sleeves with a deep V-neckline complete the silhouette with understated sophistication. A hidden metal zipper closes at the side and the interior in lined in silk. In excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear.
