Classic 1950’s Window Pane Wool Crepe Day Dress by Designer Irene / Small
A B O U T
An exquisite example of Irene Lentz’s refined American design, this early-1950s dress was created exclusively for Ransohoff’s, the legendary San Francisco luxury department store. Tailored in a soft charcoal and ivory wool check, the dress perfectly captures Irene’s signature combination of understated femininity and precise structure.
The fitted sheath silhouette features a crisp ivory pique collar and a contrasting vertical plastron panel in coordinating pinstripe, accented with oversized ivory buttons and delicate fringed edging—a witty nod to menswear shirting. Long sleeves end in turned cuffs, and strategic darts sculpt a trim hourglass line. A concealed front zipper and back walking vent complete the thoughtful construction.
Irene Lentz, celebrated for dressing Hollywood icons such as Doris Day and Ginger Rogers, was renowned for her architectural yet feminine approach to tailoring. Her designs for Ransohoff’s exemplified the sophistication of postwar American fashion—elegant, wearable, and quietly luxurious.
Note: both front panel and ivory linen collar are fully detachable.
