An exceptional couture evening gown by George Stavropoulos, dating to the 1960s and exemplifying his mastery of fluid line, sensual minimalism, and architectural drape. Rendered in luminous iridescent silk velvet, the surface shifts between saturated plum, magenta, and deep inky violet blue, creating remarkable depth and movement with every step.

The gown is impeccably cut with Stavropoulos’ signature sculptural precision: a clean, squared neckline with wide straps frames the décolletage, while the bodice is expertly contoured to the torso, elongating the line of the body. The skirt flows into a dramatic, softly flounced hem, adding volume and rhythm without disrupting the gown’s elegant restraint. The back releases into a soft demi train for added drama. Fully lined in fuchsia silk taffeta, the interior construction underscores its couture-level craftsmanship and ensures beautiful structure and wear. 

George Stavropoulos was celebrated for blending classical Grecian influences with modernist American couture, dressing some of the most sophisticated women of the era including Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Callas and Barbra Streisand.  His velvet gowns are particularly prized for their technical complexity and sensual wearability, and examples of this caliber are increasingly scarce. His gowns are featured in The Met, FIT and the Smithsonian Institute. 

One of my very favorite pieces in my collection, truly museum worthy and even more spectacular in person. Would make an unforgettable red carpet moment. In excellent condition.
