An elegant mid-1960s black wool coat by Originala. It is semi fitted through the bodice, with a flared A-line skirt and a long double-breasted front of gold-rimmed black buttons. The collar is a small convertible design that stands up in a band and has a buttoned tab. The lapel is a pronounced notch. Hip flap pockets sit at the waistline, and the back has clean vertical seaming. The wool is a fine diagonal twill with a dense, crisp hand, and the coat is lined in black taffeta.Ā
About the maker: Originala was one of the better suit and coat houses on Seventh Avenue in New York, started in 1941 by the Bader family. FIT's archive describes it as a high-priced coat firm that went public in 1962. Designers who worked for the house include Marc Bohan, Frances Heffernan, Ilie Wacs and Louis Dell'Olio. That list puts Originala in good company, since Bohan went on to lead Dior. It was among the most expensive coat lines of its day, and late-1960s coats averaged about $500. That is well over $4,000 in today's money, which is couture-adjacent pricing for ready-to-wear.
