Norman Norell for I. Magnin Tomato Wool Jacket, 1960s

An iconic vivid tomato-red wool jacket by Norman Norell, made for I. Magnin. The clean, graphic shape has an oversized stand-away collar, three big patch pockets and a rounded hem with side vents. Tonal buttons run down the front, and the cuffed sleeves close with button tabs. It is fully lined in matching silk taffeta, and the whole piece shows the precise tailoring and modern simplicity Norell was known for. A rare piece of modern fashion design in excellent condition. 

About the Designer
Norman Norell (1900–1972) was born Norman Levinson in Noblesville, Indiana, and trained at Pratt Institute. He worked in costume design and with Hattie Carnegie before co-founding Traina-Norell in 1941. He opened his own house in 1960. He won the first Coty American Fashion Critics' Award in 1943 and was called the "dean of American fashion." He is best known for his sequined "mermaid" sheaths, his tailored culotte suits and his sleek, impeccably made daywear. His work helped establish American design as equal to Paris couture.
