Ā William Travilla (1920ā1990) was a costume designer at 20th Century Fox. He won an Academy Award for The Adventures of Don Juan (1948) and became best known for dressing Marilyn Monroe. His famous work includes the pink satin gown in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and the white halter dress in The Seven Year Itch. He understood how fabric moves on camera, and you can see it in this dress.
The dress is layered, hand-ruched chocolate brown silk chiffon over a glowing orange silk chiffon secondary layer and a blood orange crepe layer.Ā The ruched bodice has a square neckline and a halter cut. The back is bare, with a cascading cowl drape across the shoulder blades. The full circle skirt is cut for movement. The brown chiffon edge is finished with a delicate hand-rolled hem. The bodice is boned and fully lined. Zips up the back with original metal zipper.Ā Designer pieces from Travilla's early ready-to-wear work are scarce, and this one has the Hollywood glamour his name stands for. In excellent condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear.
Necklace for styling purposes only.Ā
