Philip Somerville London Fur Felt Pillbox Hat with Silk Bow, 1980s

A darling black and white tilted pillbox hat from one of London’s most famous milliners. Philip Somerville—later Royal Warrant holder and creator of countless headpieces for British high society including the Queen and Princess Diana—built this piece in dense black fur felt, its clean rounded crown piped in crisp white silk. At the back, a jaunty black felt bow perches like a punctuation mark, its center wrapped in the same white silk for a sharp color-blocked finish.

The silhouette is pure ladylike ’80s does 60's polish: a close-fitting pillbox shape meant to sit forward on the head, equally at home at the races or with a tailored coat for city wear. The fur felt gives it substance and a soft, brushed hand-feel, while the white trim keeps the whole thing from reading too severe. In excellent condition, clean and ready to wear.
