A smart American take on the Paris-inspired afternoon-to-cocktail ensemble, by Jo Copeland, one of my favorite mid century designers. The fitted navy sheath has a square neckline and short sleeves. Its bodice is banded in silk stripes of navy, periwinkle and ivory, and the shoulders carry matching striped bows. A solid navy band at the midriff keeps the stripes from overwhelming the figure. The skirt is slim and finished with a back vent. The matching cropped jacket is cut in the same striped silk, with a standing round collar and wide three-quarter sleeves. It has three large navy buttons and a box pleat at the back. The stripes run horizontally on the body and on the diagonal in the sleeves, and they chevron at the back collar. It's a very well-cut set that works as a suit or as a dress with a jacket. Zips up the back with original metal zipper. In overall excellent condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear. 

About the designer: Jo Copeland (1899–1982) was a New York designer who trained at Parsons and the Art Students League. She began selling sketches to Pattullo Modes in the 1920s and became a partner in the firm in the late 1930s, when it became Pattullo-Jo Copeland. She was celebrated for upscale ready-to-wear, for her "after five" ensembles, and for a two-piece suit designed to be worn without a blouse. She won the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1944.
