A stunning example of mid-century Beverly Hills couture, this Maxwell Shieff cocktail dress exemplifies the glamour and craftsmanship of 1950s American fashion.
The dress features a classic hourglass bodice flowing into a full, graceful A-line skirt falling to midi length — the quintessential silhouette of the era. The fitted waist and sweeping skirt reflect the strong influence of Dior’s “New Look” aesthetic that defined the decade.
The standout feature is the exquisite ivory/cream corded lace — a substantial, heavily embroidered needle lace with bold scrolling floral motifs. The lace overlay is worn over a rich scarlet red taffeta lining, creating a striking two-tone effect that makes the cream embroidery pop dramatically. Scattered pearl embellishments are nestled within the lace motifs, adding a delicate luminosity throughout. The dress closes with a center back metal zipper and is fully lined in crimson red taffeta, with a scoop neckline front and back framed by wide shoulder straps.
