Pauline Trigère Silk Evening Dress, 1962, Bergdorf Goodman

Black, amber, tobacco and cream bloom across this silk evening sheath, woven in a painterly, almost leopard-like floral that glows with the sheen of the silk. The sculpted halter has cut-away shoulders and a button detail at one shoulder. The bodice is fitted to a tiny waist and flows into a sweeping trumpet flounce, a silhouette that is pure early-'60s Trigère. Everything is cut and seamed with couture precision, and the dress is fully lined in silk. The Bergdorf Goodman label is handwritten "Mrs. Jack Dreyfus" and dated 10-1-62, so this has the rare distinction of coming with its original owner and purchase date. Zips up the side with original zipper, in excellent condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear. 

About Pauline Trigère
Born in Paris in 1908 to a tailor father and a dressmaker mother, Trigère trained at the house of Martial et Armand before emigrating to New York in 1937. She opened her own house in 1942 with her brother Robert. She was known as a master of cut, and famously worked directly in the fabric with scissors rather than from sketches. Her reputation rested on precise tailoring, inventive and often unexpected fabrics, and clean, sculptural lines. Her coats, suits and evening clothes were worn by Claudette Colbert, Lauren Bacall and Josephine Baker, among others. She won multiple Coty Awards and was an anchor of American high fashion until her house closed in the 1990s. She died in 2002 at age 93.
