Ceil Chapman’s mastery of draped jersey is on full display in this late 1950s cocktail dress in midnight blue. The fitted bodice is constructed entirely of intricately crosshatched ruching in silk jersey, with the fabric manipulated into a deep V at both front and back — the rear décolletage a signature Chapman flourish that balanced propriety with allure. Three-quarter sleeves continue the ruched treatment to the wrist. Below a defined waist, the skirt shifts to layers of silk chiffon cut in a full circle, falling to cocktail length with characteristic weightless movement. The metal zip closure runs center back through the bodice. The label reads “Ceil Chapman” in silver script on black grosgrain. Fully lined interior. Original metal zipper up the back. In excellent condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear.
