A study in New Look drama and romantic contrast, this circa 1955–1960 cocktail dress pairs an inky black silk taffeta full skirt with an illusion bodice of exceptional guipure lace. The lace — worked in a bold floral and lattice pattern with scalloped edges — forms cap sleeves that extend from a sweetheart-shaped décolletage, the neckline traced in a fine line of gold rhinestone trim that catches the light against the champagne satin under bodice. The back bodice continues the guipure treatment, maintaining the illusion effect through to the waistline. The skirt is full with side pockets and a size zipper. In overall very good condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear.
