Sublime 1970's Scott Barrie Silk Chiffon Pleated Evening Dress / S
đź‘‹ A B O U T
A stunning evening gown in fine-pleated black silk chiffon by Scott Barrie, retailed at Saks Fifth Avenue. The body is constructed entirely in knife-pleated chiffon, fluid and columnar, falling straight to the hem with pleats continuing to the floor’s edge. A wide lace yoke — floral Chantilly-style — frames the neckline front and back, its scalloped lower edge transitioning to the pleated bodice. The balloon sleeves billow dramatically from the shoulder before gathering into lace-trimmed cuffs. Zips up the back and fully lined. A narrow satin ribbon belt ties at the waist. In excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear.Â
(*Scott Barrie (born Nelson Barrie, Philadelphia, 1941–1993) was one of the most significant American designers of the 1970s and a central, if chronically underrecognized, figure in the decade’s fashion landscape. He launched his label in New York in 1969 and quickly built a following among fashion editors and a discerning downtown clientele drawn to his mastery of fluid, body-conscious dressing in silk, chiffon, and matte jersey. His work emphasized sensuality through cut and drape rather than ornament — bias-cut silhouettes, plunging backs, and the kind of considered simplicity that placed him in the company of Halston and Giorgio di Sant’Angelo without the equivalent commercial machinery behind him.
Barrie was one of a small number of Black designers working at the designer level in American fashion during this period, alongside Arthur McGee and Stephen Burrows, and was notable for consistently casting Black models — including Iman and Pat Cleveland — in his presentations at a time when that was far from standard practice. He relocated to Rome in the early 1980s, where he continued designing until his death in 1993. His work has received renewed scholarly and collector attention in recent years as part of a broader reassessment of Black designers’ contributions to 20th-century American fashion. - from Wikipedia )
