A dramatic full circle skirt in black cotton, densely hand-embroidered with a whimsical tree-and-vine motif in a riot of jewel-tone florals — magenta, cobalt, chartreuse, gold, violet — climbing the skirt in swirling scrollwork over polka-dot and dashed “trunks.” Fully gathered at the waist for maximum swing and drama, with the embroidery worked entirely by hand — no two motifs quite identical, a hallmark of genuine Taxco needlework. Label reads “Tachi Castillo, 100% Algodón, Made in Mexico.” In excellent condition, clean and ready to wear. The size of this skirt is adjustable depending on wear you fasten the hook and eyes.

*About the designer: Tachi (Luz Maria) Castillo was born in Mexico City in 1918 and settled with her family in Taxco in the 1930s, home turf for a family already renowned for its silversmithing. Her brothers became celebrated silver designers, while Tachi became the first to bring hand-embroidered dresses to Taxco  — the story goes that her first two designs sold within a morning of being displayed in the family silver shop. She opened her own eponymous shop around 1937, then in 1944 opened a store with her husband called Gracias a Dios.  Her pieces were made largely for the tourist trade but broke from the standard folkloric village scenes of the era, and examples of her work are now held in museum collections like FIDM in Los Angeles.
