A rare 1950's ballet pink silk satin party dress of exceptional quality, made by one of my very favorite mid century designers, Karen Stark for Harvey Berin. The bodice features  a sheer illusion yoke densely embroidered with scrolling floral vines worked in silver bugle beads, seed beads, and sequin accents that catch the light with every movement. The embroidery spans the full width of the shoulders and dissolves into the satin below, creating the illusion of a jeweled décolletage without bare skin. Cap sleeves, also in the embroidered net, extend the design outward with a soft, petal-like edge.
The skirt is the dress’s second act: a full-volume silhouette, full at the hip and picked up at the hem by a pair of matching satin bows that create a festive, almost theatrical pouf — a detail no doubt inspired by Christian Dior. The interior of the dress is almost as lovely as the exterior, with a boned corset and attached pink petticoat. Zips up the back with original metal zipper, in overall excellent condition, freshly cleaned and ready to wear. 

*Harvey Berin was a respected New York house known for refined evening and occasion wear, with Karen Stark serving as its long-tenured in-house designer — an arrangement common among mid-century American manufacturers who employed named designers while marketing under the house label. This piece was sold at Bonwit Teller.

Condition:  overall excellent, freshly cleaned and ready to wear. Minor signs of wear typical of age including a light crease mark along the hem from when it was previously shortened. Faint discoloration on one of the underarms, only seen under close inspection. See provided close up pictures for full condition report. Wears and presents beautifully.
