This breathtaking cocktail dress is a masterclass in the restrained glamour that made Philip Hulitar the darling of New York society throughout the golden age of American fashion. From 1949 until his retirement in 1964, Hulitar produced some of the most sophisticated gowns of the American couture era — his work was even selected to represent the United States at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels.

Rendered in dreamy silvery-lilac lace over a blush silk foundation, the illusion neckline creates a romantic sweetheart effect while the fitted bodice cinches into a beautifully defined waist. A sculptural fabric rosette at the hip adds a whisper of whimsy, while the full A-line skirt sweeps gracefully to tea length — and beneath the hem, a multi-layered petticoat of graduated grey-violet tulle over a blush silk slip reveals the couture hand-finishing found throughout. The bodice is boned for support and sheer illusion fabric covers the neckline. Original metal zipper up the back. In overall excellent condition, clean and ready to wear. A rare piece of mid century American couture.
