A rare and museum worthy early 1950's Hattie Carnegie ensemble: a sleek black silk ottoman suit with aĀ  fabulous interior secret. The jacket has a nipped waist, a sculpted peplum with scooped cutouts that flash pink silk, and a collar inset in the same rose. Inside, it is lined in pink and sage-green silk. The matching sash is a long, bias-cut bow in pink, sage and salmon that ties at the neck for a pop of color against the black.

The sleeveless pink silk blouse is the surprise. It buttons down the front with self-covered buttons and has a wide sailor-style collar in sage green, with double ties inset in green that knot into a bow. The back is a bold inverted V of green against the pink. The black pleated skirt is ballerina length with a full sweep. The skirt zips up the side with original metal zipper. The suit is in excellent condition overall, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear. A stunning piece of fashion history.Ā

*About Hattie Carnegie
Born Henrietta Kanengeiser in Vienna, she arrived in New York as a girl and took the name Carnegie, borrowed from the wealthiest man in America. She started with a hat shop around 1909, moved into custom dressmaking, and by the 1920s was making buying trips to Paris. Her East 49th Street salon dressed film stars, socialites and First Ladies, including Joan Crawford and the Duchess of Windsor. She launched ready-to-wear and the Spectator Sports line in the late 1920s and '30s, bringing couture polish to the American middle market. Her design staff included Norman Norell, Pauline TrigĆØre and Jean Louis. She died in 1956, and the house continued into the mid-1960s.
