Extraordinary 1950's Traina- Norell Knife Pleated Silk Floral Print Dress / M

Traina-Norell was one of American fashion’s most distinguished collaborations — the pairing of Anthony Traina’s manufacturing house with Norman Norell’s design genius produced some of the most iconic ready-to-wear of the 1950s. The partnership ran from 1941 until 1960, when Norell departed to establish his own label, making any Traina-Norell piece a collector’s artifact of that golden era.
This 1950's sleeveless dress is executed in a fine silk printed with a small-scale ditsy floral — pink blooms scattered across a ground of spring green — and demonstrates the meticulous construction that set Norell’s work apart. The entire bodice is composed of narrow vertical knife pleats, pressed flat and running continuously from neckline to waist; the effect is both architectural and fluid. A fitted waistband bridges the bodice and the generously pleated full skirt, which sweeps to a graceful midi length. The back closes with original zipper and finishes with a delicate self-fabric tie at the neckline. In overall excellent condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear.Â
