Norman Norell for I. Magnin Wool Jersey Dress, 1960s
Norman Norell, the "Dean of American Fashion," was a master of the clean, impeccably constructed line. This dress shows why. It is cut in a vivid tangerine wool jersey, with a jewel neckline and long fitted sleeves that give the bodice a quiet, tailored polish. A slim self-fabric belt closes with a covered button. Below it, two sculptural patch pockets curve over the hips. They are the kind of graphic detail Norell used in place of ornament, and they are both useful and striking. A silk lining and a hidden back zipper complete a piece that is understated and very sophisticated.
Norell trained in costume design before working for Hattie Carnegie. In 1941 he joined Anthony Traina to form Traina-Norell, and in 1960 he launched his own house. He insisted that American design could match Paris in quality, and he built his reputation on couture-level tailoring, restraint, and wearable luxury. His pieces were made for women to live in. Wool jersey, then mostly a menswear and sportswear fabric, became one of his signatures. He won the first Coty American Fashion Critics' Award in 1943 and was the first designer inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame in 1958. He also received the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award. This piece carries the exclusive Norman Norell for I. Magnin & Co. label.
