1890s Black Silk Taffeta Cropped Jacket, "The Palmer Garment," circa 1893-1896

A fashionable cropped jacket from the mid-1890s, when sleeves reached their greatest size. The huge gigot (leg-of-mutton) sleeves are gathered into the armhole and fall to a pintucked forearm and a trimmed cuff. The jacket is cut in black silk taffeta with a wide, flat sailor-style collar and a pointed basque front. The back is pintucked in vertical rows, with diamond-shaped waist tabs at the sides and center back. Ivory and tan guipure-style lace with small gilt beads edges the collar, front opening and cuffs. Black silk knotted frogs ornament the front. The jacket is lined in lavender silk satin and carries a "The Palmer Garment" label at the neck. In very good wearable condition with some signs of wear. See notes on condition.

Condition: initially I thought this jacket was near perfect, but on close inspection I noticed that silk was starting to break at the shoulders and there is some underarm discoloration on the interior lining. The silk is torn above the right cuff. A great piece for study, costume or display. Still wears and presents beautifully, with flaws only seen upon close inspection.
