Edwardian Black Fur Felt Picture Hat with Ostrich Plumes and Grapes, circa 1908-1912

A dramatic Edwardian picture hat in black long-nap fur felt, with a wide, gently dipping brim and a shallow crown. It reflects the silhouette made fashionable by the "Merry Widow" craze of the late 1900s, which stayed popular for several more seasons. The trim is lavish and typical of the period. Full ostrich plumes in aubergine, lilac and cream, the cream ones tipped in brown, sweep up and back from the crown. At the front is a cluster of grapes: some covered in gilt metallic net over a cream base, others in plain glass. The crown is lined in black silk, gathered to a center point. One size fits everyone, hat stays in place with a large hat pin. In overall excellent condition for age.
