Rare Late 1940's Irene Lentz Grey Wool Pinstripe Ladies Suit With Pink Lining / M

A rare, sculptural suit by Irene, the Hollywood designer sometimes called "California's couturier." It is cut in dove-grey wool flannel with a hairline rose pinstripe, and the stripes are mitered into chevrons at the peplum, hip, and cuffs. The jacket has a whittled waist, a notched lapel, and a dramatic winged collar that stands high at the back. The back and front peplum are slit into pleated tabs, the sleeves have angled cuffs, and three oversized buttons close the front. It is lined throughout in coral-pink silk crepe, and the slim straight skirt has a back kick pleat. The woven label reads "Exclusively for Neusteter's, Denver," which fits the way Irene's ready-to-wear line was sold in the late 1940s. In excellent condition, absolutely flawless. A rare, museum quality suit by one of the most important designers of Hollywood's Golden Age.Ā

*Irene Lentz, who worked professionally as simply "Irene," was raised in Baker, Montana. After a short film acting career she opened a small Los Angeles dress shop. Its success led to an offer from Bullocks Wilshire, where she became the first American designer with a boutique inside a large department store. She is credited as an originator of the dressmaker suit popular in the late 1930s, and her clients included Marlene Dietrich, Claudette Colbert, and Ginger Rogers. In 1942 she succeeded Adrian as MGM's executive designer, and she earned an Oscar nomination for B.F.'s Daughter (1948). Her ready-to-wear company, Irene, Inc., was financed by twenty stores, including Bergdorf Goodman, Marshall Field, and Neiman Marcus, in exchange for exclusive rights to her suits, dresses, and evening wear. She left MGM around 1949ā50 to focus on it. She died in 1962, and the house continued without her until 1971.Ā
