This exceptional 1930s evening ensemble exemplifies the height of Depression-era glamour, created in sumptuous silk velvet dyed a rich, regal shade of amethyst purple. The gown is cut in a classic bias silhouette, skimming the body with the fluid, hourglass line that defined the decade. Horizontal seaming throughout the velvet subtly contours the figure while creating a softly quilted visual texture that enhances the fabric’s luminosity as it catches the light.

The bodice is elegantly restrained in the front, balanced by a dramatic back detail: a deep, vertical keyhole opening that extends from the neckline to the waist, revealing just enough skin to create impact without excess. This striking feature anchors the design and firmly situates the gown in the sophisticated, sensual aesthetic of the early–mid 1930s. Snaps up the side for easy getting on and off. 

Completing the ensemble is the original matching silk velvet cape, designed with soft flutter sleeves and fine vertical pleating that echoes the gown’s linear construction. The cape fastens at the neckline with a velvet tie, framing the shoulders and lending movement and theatrical elegance—an increasingly rare survival when found with its original dress.
