Stunning 1950's Herbert Sondheim Black Silk Cocktail Dress / S
đź‘‹ A B O U T
Absolutely stunning 1950's cocktail dress by New York designer Herbert Sondheim. Cut from black silk with a sweep of skirt that could fill a ballroom, it opens with a wide off-the-shoulder portrait neckline — the scalloped inner edge a dramatic detail that enhances the dĂ©colletage. The bodice is double-breasted, fastened with jet-black buttons, and fitted to the waist with a tailored perfection that reflects Sondheim’s devotion to the Paris shows, which he attended religiously throughout his career.  The full circle skirt sweeps from a defined waist seam and closes via a side metal zipper. Theres even a side pocket! The construction is immaculate throughout. In overall excellent condition, freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear.Â
Today the name Sondheim belongs to Broadway, but in 1950s New York it meant something else entirely: superbly made, Paris-informed dresses sold only at Bonwit Teller, Lord & Taylor, and Best & Co. Herbert Sondheim (1895–1966) was a dominant player in the development of New York City’s Seventh Avenue fashion business, one of five houses designated “New York Couture,” and this dress shows exactly why the label commanded that distinction.
