A B O U T

Extraordinary 1920's Egyptian Revival inspired evening gown by renowned New York fashion designer Sally Milgrim.

"Born in New York City on April 21, 1892, to Philip and Tillie Noble, Sally Noble was just twenty-two years old when she married Charles Milgrim on June 27, 1914. Charles Milgrim was then operating a custom suit business on the Lower East Side of New York City with his father and two brothers. Shortly after World War I, with little more than a public school education, Sally Milgrim joined the business as a dress designer. By the 1920s the business had grown and moved briefly to Broadway and 72nd Street before moving permanently to 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. Milgrim, at this point, not only designed dresses for the company but had expanded into exclusive evening wear and was marketing her talent for fashion to the “smart society set, political wives as well as stars of the stage.” During Milgrim’s career, she became a friend of the impresario Florenz Ziegfeld and designed clothing for entertainers such as Marilyn Miller, Ethel Merman, Pearl White, and Mary Pickford. The quality of her ready-to-wear gowns, wraps, furs, negligees, and accessories was rare at a time when high fashion was still a made-to-order industry." (from an article published in the Jewish Woman's Archive)

The gown we are featuring is made of a single layer of gleaming gold metallic lame and a gorgeous turquoise and gold lace top layer that seems inspired by the Egyptian Revival movement that was popular at that time. The straps are metallic gold thread and embroidered with citrine colored rhinestones. They are the only area that is damaged and will need new backing. Hook and eyes at the side. My favorite feature of the gown is the train, which is designed with a center slit that allows the wearer to carry gracefully on the arm of even up the shoulder. This gown belonged to the same person that owned our two Sadie Nemser gowns.

This dress is in overall excellent condition for age. I have included detailed photographs that represent the condition report. The area that represents the most damage is the backing on the shoulder straps where the long fibers have split. See close up pictures. We will repair them to the best of our ability, unless the buyer would prefer to handle themselves. The lace under the arms is a little discolored and frayed. See pictures. The pictures accurately depict the condition of the dress which is overall excellent. Please message with any further questions.

Upon the sale of this dress we will reach out to the buyer to arrange secure shipping with insurance and signature confirmation.
