This enchanting 1920s evening dress, retailed by James McCreery & Co. of New York, is a stunning example of Art Deco elegance. Made of printed crinkled silk chiffon in a tone of pale green-cast yellow, a cross between moonlight and chartreuse. The dress is overlaid with black lace godets and panels that add both textural depth and fluid movement. The softly bloused bodice, tied at the neckline, is cinched with a black velvet sash, creating a graceful contrast and emphasizing the dropped waist silhouette typical of the decade. The dress features a chartreuse silk slip with scalloped hem and lace at the bodice. Easily slips on over the head.  In remarkably excellent condition, clean and ready to wear.

James McCreery & Co. was one of New York’s most distinguished department stores of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded by Irish immigrant James McCreery in the 1850s, the store rose to prominence with its Broadway flagship at 11th Street, celebrated for its cast-iron architecture and expansive display windows.

By the 1920s, McCreery & Co. was a destination for refined, fashion-conscious women, offering high-quality ready-to-wear and imported garments. Competing with establishments like B. Altman, Arnold Constable, and Lord & Taylor, McCreery’s was considered a mark of taste and status. Dresses bearing the McCreery label were not only fashionable but also carried the prestige of being purchased at one of New York’s most respected emporiums of luxury goods.
