Philip Hulitar (1906–1992) was a celebrated American designer known for his luxurious evening dresses and cocktail ensembles. After beginning his career as a fashion illustrator, he joined Bergdorf Goodman in the 1930s, where he rose to become the head of its custom salon. Hulitar was renowned for his ability to translate elegance into fluid, wearable garments that flattered the female form.

In 1949, he launched his own label in New York, quickly establishing himself as a sought-after designer for society women and celebrities of the era. His creations were noted for their classic lines, rich fabrics, and dramatic flourishes such as sculptural bows, draped panels, and inventive necklines—features exemplified in this gown.

Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Hulitar’s label was synonymous with tasteful glamour, often spotlighted in high-fashion magazines. Today, his work is highly prized by collectors and vintage connoisseurs for its blend of Old World refinement and modern American sensibility.
