The sweeping silhouette and sculpted shoulders capture the romantic, fairy-tale elegance that defined late-Depression-era evening wear, when Hollywood-inspired opulence offered an escape from austerity.

The coat closes at the front with two self-covered velvet buttons, drawing the eye to its nipped waist and gracefully flared hem. The interior is fully lined in ivory rayon, adding to its fluid drape and luxurious feel. The large hood—both practical and theatrical—frames the face in white fur, evoking the winter evening glamour of stars like Carole Lombard and Norma Shearer.

A “Consumers Protection Label” and National Coat and Suit Industry Recovery Board tag sewn into the lining indicate its manufacture during the early-to-mid 1930s, part of the government’s regulation of fair labor practices in the fashion trade during the New Deal era.
