👋 A B O U T
This iconic evening gown captures the essence of Madame Grès’ early modernist vision and the sculptural sophistication that would come to define her couture legacy. Executed in fluid black and ivory silk with a dynamic “zebra” motif, the dress bears a striking resemblance to the famous 1938 Harper’s Bazaar photograph of Lisa Fonssagrives by George Hoyningen-Huene—one of the most enduring fashion images of the pre-war era. In fact, the only thing different from the dress in the photograph is the interpretation of the bodice, a detail that a couture client could request to have changed in order to suit their personal taste. The fabric and design are identical otherwise.
Though this example is missing its label, the artistry of its construction, the impeccable bias drape, and the distinctive placement of the diagonal striping unmistakably recall the work of Madame Grès. The gown’s bodice features delicately twisted shoulder straps and a softly pleated neckline that sculpt and frame the torso. The asymmetrical panel of ivory silk striped in black creates a mesmerizing play of light and movement, visually echoing the dramatic chiaroscuro captured in Hoyningen-Huene’s studio portrait. Every seam is precisely couture stitched by hand. The skirt wraps seamlessly around the hips and secures at the waist with snaps and hook and eyes.
With its combination of architectural precision and sensual fluidity, this gown embodies Grès’ unique fusion of ancient Greek drapery and modernist abstraction. It celebrates the female form through structure rather than embellishment—a principle that became central to her design philosophy.
I am almost certain this gown was created by Madame Gres and has somehow survived that last decades in near pristine condition. A rare and highly collectible piece that is sure to increase in value. Clean and ready to wear.
