The fitted bodice has a high officer collar, a curved basque front and box-pleated back tails. Fifteen gilt celestial picture buttons march down the front, each showing a crescent moon, a crowned face and a field of stars with iridescent recesses. They close through hand-worked purple twist buttonholes.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe skirt is the real showpiece. Knife pleats fall from a gathered waistband, and a swagged overskirt is pulled into a sculptural puff at the back, exactly the drama the period demanded.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe inside is just as good. The bodice is hand-finished with self-fabric bias-bound seams, silk tacking and a separate twill waist stay with hooks and eyes.
