This 1930s princess-line coat is covered from collar to hem in hand-worked Kashmiri chain stitch: curling vines, blossoms, and leaves in mustard, lilac, sage, olive, and slate on a soft powder-blue linen ground. A wavy olive-green band of dense stitching runs down the center front, and the hem and cuffs finish in a stitched hillside border with zigzag braid. The pattern flows right across the seams, so the embroidery was clearly planned around the coat's construction! It has a nipped, fitted waist, a flared skirt with a sweeping hem, pleated puffed sleeves, and notched lapels. A plush champagne fox collar frames the neckline. The coat closes with a row of fabric-covered ball buttons and matching cloth loops, and it is lined in soft blue gray rayon. We have lightly stitched on the collar.
